Lobby to defend the NHS

TRADE UNIONIST AND SOCIALIST COALITION (TUSC) NEWS RELEASE –29 NOVEMBER 2016

SUPPORT THE LOBBY TO DEFEND THE NHS on THURSDAY DECEMBER 1 2016
1pm at CUNARD BUILDING

TUSC is calling for a mass mobilisation to support Keep Our NHS Public’s call for everyone in Liverpool concerned with the fate of the NHS to lobby the Health & Wellbeing Board on Thursday 1 December at Cunard Building. The leader of the Cheshire & Merseyside Sustainability and Transformation Plan Louise Shepherd is due to address Councillors and health managers, seeking their support for what is in fact a £900m regional cuts and privatisation programme. TUSC is pleased to note that the demands of our campaign are now supported by Steve Rotheram and some Merseyside Labour MPS.
Roger Bannister, TUSC candidate for Liverpool mayor in May 2016, is hoping to meet Labour’s metro mayoral candidate Steve Rotheram to seek a common front in condemning this unprecedented attack on the NHS.
Roger Bannister said: ‘What is at stake is nothing less than the future of the NHS as a public service. I will be calling on Steve Rotheram to join me in demanding that Labour councillors publicly declare their opposition to this proposed degradation of the NHS and to publicly oppose the closure of the Women’s Hospital.’
This lobby provides an opportunity for the people of Merseyside to stop the breakup of the NHS. Please attend in vast numbers.

MAYOR JOE’S CUNNING PLAN

TRADE UNIONIST AND SOCIALIST COALITION (TUSC) NEWS RELEASE –11 NOVEMBER 2016

MAYOR ANDERSON’S CUNNING PLAN TO HAMMER LIVERPOOL’S TAX PAYERS

TUSC continues to oppose all the Tory cuts being implemented by Mayor Anderson’s council and views with outrage the next cuts package of £90million with the appalling consequences for the neediest in our city.

We condemn the lack of a strategy by this Labour council to fight the cuts and oppose the latest cunning plan of the Mayor in his proposal to ask Liverpool’s long suffering tax payers to stump up a further 10% to pay for Tory cuts while those who caused the crisis: the bankers, the hedge fund managers, the private equity spivs, and the tax dodgers continue to increase their vast wealth by at least 5% yearly while services for the neediest are butchered

The Mayor’s proposals mean paying more for less without ending the cuts as a 50% shortfall will remain. His defeat for the nomination as Metro Mayor in favour of Steve Rotheram is a clear sign of dissatisfaction with his stewardship.

TUSC calls for:

  1. Not a website gimmick but a real consultation with the communities and trade unions of the city on what resources are needed to provide services.
  2. Such a consultation to include consideration of a plan of action to force the Tories to retreat from their continuing brutal attacks on the neediest in our society
  3. In the event of the Mayor continuing with his disastrous implementation of Tory cuts we will meet with the anti-cuts organisations and unions with a view to organising a serious fight back against both the Tories and the Labour council.

TUSC says that if a referendum is called let it be on two simple questions:

  1. Do you want your Labour council to refuse to carry out any further cuts?
  2. Do you want your Labour council to seriously campaign to retrieve the funding that this fat cats’ government has stolen from the city?

We will be calling on Steve Rotheram to declare his support for this initiative.

Trump: don’t mourn – organise!

Trump’s victory and Jeremy Corbyn’s struggle against the combined forces of the Tories, the billionaire media and their Labour shadows in Parliament masquerading as representatives of the working class, require a sober analysis of how socialists should arm the working class with policies and a strategy to defeat the forces of reaction and to build a Party capable of leading the working class to power. The Socialist Party’s Socialism Weekend will provide that analysis and guide to action. Don’t mourn – organise. Don’t miss it. November 12th and 13th in London.

Mere words will not force a Tory retreat

The cant, hypocrisy and callousness of the Tories is displayed by just two of its latest measures.

1 The cuts in benefit entitlement to the unfortunate which will plunge thousands of families into even deeper poverty. The phoney mantra that work should pay more than benefits is deployed to depict the workless as scroungers, the oldest slander in the book.

2 The rejection of the Orgreave campaigners for a public enquiry into the behaviour of the police. This is a monumental cover-up designed to protect those who gave the police the order to smash the miners by any means necessary, including the use of army detachments. The revolting spectacle of heavily protected police being unleashed with military precision on miners dressed in summer tops and trainers will live in infamy in this country’s history.

But words of condemnation are not enough. We need a powerful mass movement to defeat a Tory party bankrolled by hedge fund managers, private equity spivs, rack renting landlords and international tax dodgers. As a first step Labour councils should refuse to implement any more draconic Tory cuts. Secondly, give full backing for the Orgreave campaigners in their fight for justice.
